Type Locality and Naming

The type section is on the slope of Yingan Hill northwest of Village Yingan in Kalpin County, Xinjiang. The Dawangou Fm was named by Zhou Tianrong in 1990, and was published by Zhao Zhiyin and Zhang Guizhi (1991).

Synonym: (大湾沟组)


Lithology and Thickness

The Formation is composed of light gray, grayish yellow and gray medium- to thin-bedded and nodular muddy bioclastic micrite, with glauconite-bearing algal bindstone in the middle part and irregular chert bands at the base. In the type area, the Dawangou Fm is 15 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably on the pelmicrite limestone of the Yingshan Fm

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the black shale of the Sargan Fm.

Regional extent

The Dawangou Fm is exposed widespread in Bachu to Kalpin, northern Tarim.

Fossils

This formation yields cephalopods of Dideroceras wahlenbergi-Ancistroceras assemblage, trilobite Carolinites ichangensis and conodonts of Baltoniodus aff. navis assemblage, Amorphognathus variabilis assemblage and Eoplacongnathus suecicus assemblage in ascending order.
